By now most of you, our readers, know that we spend many weekends at different markets or fairs vending our novels. We love exploring new places and meeting new people. Talking with different people is a joy. Some have questions about writing and Drew has lots of good advice, usually learned the hard way. But, most just want a minute of our time to be listened to and valued which we are happy to do.

At our most recent event, on Saturday, a fragile older woman with a cane bought the first novel in our Challenge Series featuring Dave and Katie. On Sunday, I received a call from her asking if we were still at the market and if so would I let her know. I almost missed her call completely as I didn’t recognize the number, didn’t answer and rarely check my voicemail when we are at markets. But I felt a nudge to check and found her message. So I called her back. She came awhile later and told us that she had almost finished reading the first novel and wanted the rest in the series. That’s five more novels Drew put in a bag for her. Drew offered to carry them to her car and she, balancing on her cane, said, “Oh no. You don’t have to do that. My car is a long way away.” To which Drew replied, “For sure I want to take them to the car for you.” And off they went, slowly.

Waiting for Drew to return I thought about this precious woman. I realized that most likely she lived alone, possibly in a retirement center. The thought that we had given some new friends, Dave and Katie, to fill her hours alone overwhelmed my heart. She will never know how much joy she gave me that day. If we take time to look around us we can always find someone who needs a kind word. And in giving that word we are the ones that benefit the most.  Oh and Drew later told me he had received a hug at her car which was an added bonus.
